a group of four uninhabited islands (Cartier Island and the three Ashmore Islands, being the three permanent dry-land areas of the Ashmore Reef) in the Indian Ocean more than 500 km off the WA coast north of Derby; under Australian government jurisdiction; includes the Ashmore Reef Marine National Nature Reserve, established in 1983.
